Day 84

We had a nice picnic lunch at a lake and then headed to Manzanar (a Japanese 'relocation center' during WWII). It was interesting to learn a little more about places like that. Ashlyn had so many questions about why the people were locked up there and such (it surprised me at how inquisitive she was). At the little cemetary there, there were origami chains/wreaths. On one of the biggest ones I noticed that it was made out of paper cranes. It made me think of that book : Sadako and The Thousand Paper Cranes...in which the origami crane has become (to some) a symbol of world peace. But the legend of the cranes is that anyone who folds 1000 paper cranes will be granted a wish. The cranes are then left exposed to the elements, slowly dissolving and becoming tattered as the wish is released. Just a little tid bit on paper cranes.

I'm glad you found that information about the paper cranes. It makes the paper wreaths and streamers left at the memorial more meaningful.

One of my kids made one of these & brought it to school today! I had come back to read the story again. :)

I don't remember seeing this stuff. I remember a sad looking paper chain, but I don't remember that. I don't know where my brain was!
